Music Program

Music is integral to the worship and community life of St. Paul’s Church in Nantucket.   Whether it is the quietest chant, or most triumphant anthem, music can do what ordinary words remain powerless to do: reach deep into our soul and move us.  Music empowers our worship experience.

While we are working hard to develop our choral program here at St. Paul’s, we believe deeply in the power of congregational singing.  Our choir’s primary responsibility is to lead and inspire congregational song.  The music is mainly taken from the 1982 Hymnal of the Episcopal Church and from the wealth of classical choir repertoire for churches.  While many of these pieces are Anglican and European in origin, we do incorporate a good number of American Hymns, Spirituals, and World Music into Sunday Services.

We recently received the gift of a Steinway Model S piano for use in the sanctuary.

Last, but not least, is the Musical Arts Series, offering a musical performance periodically, generally every other month.  Lessons and Carols were offered in December of 2006 and a Concert of Spirituals in February of 2007.

St. Columba’s Baroque Ensemble of Washington DC performed the music of Bach and Handel on April 28, at 6 pm; and the parish choir will perform Vivaldi’s Gloria on June 30, at 6 pm, together with other members of Nantucket’s musical community.

Our parish music program is open to all, parish members, friends, and guests in whatever way they are able to participate --whether it be for a week, several months, or year ‘round.
